Welcome to Reuther Middle School's  FIRST Tech Challenge Team Application Page

ALL NEW & RETURNING STUDENTS and MENTORS are required to reapply for the 2024-25 Season.

Please be sure to read this page completely before submitting your application.

The 2024-25 FIRST Tech Challenge Kickoff is in Early September, 2024!

As in past years, we will be fielding two teams. Each team is limited to 15 students per FIRST FTC Rules. We typically get over 60 applicants and thus must turn students away. This year, as we have done in the past, we will be evaluating applicants based on a point system. Students will be awarded points based on previous STEM experience, availability of their parents to become registered & active Mentors for our teams, participation in off-season training events, outreach events, demonstrated leadership, etc.

Our goal is to create two teams, each with an equal number of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, with half the students in each grade being boys and half girls. Initially we will accept approximately 40 students to "try out" for our final two 15-student teams. We expect to make cuts by the end of September down to the FTC approved team size of 15 students max per team. Students that are cut will be placed on our reserved list and may be "called up" should an opening become available. Our hope is that with preseason training and good mentorship we can get both teams to the Michigan State Finals!

Each student must complete their own student application form in order to be considered. This includes returning team members. While returning member get points for previous experience, they are not guaranteed a slot on this year's team just for showing up last year. The student application needs to be completed by the student and will be evaluated for its completeness and clarity. Students will be expected to participate in summer training sessions. Details will be sent to all applicants in June.

Parents that are willing to be Mentors earn extra points for their student. Yes, it is a form of bribery, but we can't have successful teams without a lot of parent-mentor help. Parents wishing to become Mentors must complete their application in parallel with their student's. Please keep in mind that parents who volunteer to become Mentors will be required to register with FIRST, attend training sessions over the summer months, and most importantly assist with our weekly team meetings.

PARENT MENTOR APPLICATION

Cost per student is $100. Please keep in mind that $100 per student does not come close to covering our expenses. We are sponsored by the Rochester High School FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) team, the FEDS. Since our graduating team members are destined for RHS, the FEDS are investing in the future of Reuther Students as well as the FEDS.

TRAINING CLASSES

Our hope is to offer training classes over the summer months in order to have everyone better prepared for our build season that starts with the new school year. Classes will include reading materials, prerecorded videos, and hopefully some in-person, hands on opportunities over the summer break. While attending these classes is not mandatory, those who do attend will earn extra points toward team selection.

We hope to present classes in:

Computer Aided Design (CAD) using Fusion 360

FTC Robot Programming using BLOCKS Programming Language

Basic Web Page Design & Layout
